Greater Sudbury Hydro Joins CHEC
May 19, 2020 Barrie, ON – Cornerstone Hydro Electric Concepts (CHEC) is pleased to welcome Greater Sudbury Hydro (GSH), a division of Greater Sudbury Utilities (GSU), as its newest member. Their membership in the Association brings the total number of Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) in the organization to 19 with members now serving over 277,500 customers across Ontario.
“Greater Sudbury Hydro brings a breadth of experience and knowledge to the Association that will benefit the entire membership,” said John Sherin, President of CHEC. “We’re looking forward to sharing our resources and insights so that Greater Sudbury Hydro can benefit from the extensive expertise and tools that are available in the Association.”
Sudbury was the first community in Ontario to own and operate its own electricity generating facility, which was turned up in January of 1897. Currently, Greater Sudbury Hydro delivers electricity to 47,400 customers within the City of Greater Sudbury and the municipality of West Nipissing.

CHEC provides support in the areas of Finance & Regulatory, Billing and Customer Information Systems, Project Management, Operations, Health & Safety, Human Resources, and Communications.
“CHEC is continually adapting to provide the support that our members need,” said Sherin. “During both the Conservation and Demand Management wind down last year and the challenges of COVID-19, CHEC has been able to support our members in a rapidly changing situation which allows them to prioritize and focus on what is most important – the customer. With a strong, agile core of staff we expect to continue to provide that level of support during whatever challenges the future holds.”
CHEC is a collaborative association for 19 Local Distribution Companies in Ontario. By sharing experience, knowledge and resources CHEC helps its members remain as active members of their communities, deliver value to their shareholders, provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective electricity distribution to their customers, and prepare for the energy future. The current members of CHEC are Centre Wellington Hydro Ltd., EPCOR Ontario, ERTH Power Corp., Fort Frances Power Corp., Greater Sudbury Hydro, Grimsby Power, InnPower Corp., Lakefront Utilities Inc., Lakeland Power Distribution Ltd., Newmarket-Tay Power, Niagara–on- the-Lake Hydro, Orangeville Hydro Ltd., Orillia Power Corp., Ottawa River Power Corp., Renfrew Hydro Inc., Rideau St. Lawrence Distribution Inc., Tillsonburg Hydro, Wasaga Distribution Inc., and Wellington North Power Inc.
